How to Wash Bras and Delicates in the Machine

You can usually wash bras and other delicates in the washing machine if you protect them first. These are the steps that make the difference.

Always check the care label

The label on the garment overrules everything here. If it says hand wash only, believe it. If it allows a machine wash on a delicate programme, the steps below apply.

1. Fasten hooks and zips

Close bra hooks, zips and velcro before washing. Open hooks snag other fabrics and get bent, and zips can scratch the drum and other clothes.

2. Use a zip mesh bag

A mesh laundry bag keeps small, delicate items together and stops straps and underwires from catching on other clothes or the drum. Water and detergent still pass through the mesh. Put one or two items in each bag and zip it up. Packing the bag too full means the items do not get properly clean.

3. Wash with similar items, on a delicate programme

Use a delicate or wool programme at 30 °C unless the label says otherwise, and keep light and dark items apart. Do not wash lace and underwire with heavy items like jeans or towels.

4. Keep the spin gentle

A low spin speed is kinder to elastic and fine fabric. Many machines have a setting to lower it, or you can choose a rinse-and-spin cycle.

5. Skip fabric softener

Fabric softener can coat elastic and wear it out faster. A mild detergent made for delicates is enough.

6. Dry flat or hang to dry

Heat is the main enemy of elastic. Air dry bras, tights and delicates on a rack, away from direct heat. Reshape them while they are still damp.

How often should you wash a bra?

There is no strict rule. Many people wash a bra after a few wears, and sooner after sport or heat. Rotating between a few bras gives the elastic time to recover between wears, which helps them last.
